Lettuce Pisses Me Off...


Don't get me wrong, I really like vegetables. I even like the lesser appreciated veggies like brussels sprouts, beets and collard greens. The funny thing is, I really like salads at other people's houses and out at restaurants (I'm not including the taco salad in the fried taco shell here as a salad!), but as soon as it comes to home? Nope. Not happening. It bugs me to have it in my fridge. It annoys me because it never fits in any of my normal bowls. Lettuce pisses me off, and I'm not really sure why.

For the next six weeks our CrossFit box is running a Paleo Challenge (ie teams of eleven people support each other as they all eat strict clean Paleo for 6 weeks to see how their bodies and performance changes). I'm not technically in the Challenge as I'm one of the team leaders but I'm taking this opportunity to eat clean again. Eating clean for me really means just removing cheese and wine, so I've set myself some separate goals all involving salad greens.

My goals for the next 6 weeks:
1) Eat raw salad greens with at least one meal per day, five days a week
2) One day a week eat all raw vegetables and fruits.
3) Each week try a new leafy green/source. Ie I can't eat Foxy Lettuce for all 6 weeks...puke.

So to get started? RECIPE TIME!!!!!!!!! The following recipe is for a salad dressing. The bacon and shiitakes give it substance and the balsamic vinegar's usual tang gets mellowed out a little by heating it up. You end up with this lovely caramel colored, sweet, smokey and salty dressing that is magic on tomatoes. Hope y'all like it!

(Disclaimer: I did not make this up, I wrote it down out of some garden veggie magazine at B&N and can't remember which one, nor can I find it. If you know, let me know so I can give credit where its due!)

Warm Bacon-Shiitake Salad Dressing
(serves 2ish so the recipe said)

2 Tbspn Bacon grease (drained from baked bacon)
2 Tbspn Olive oil
8oz (about 8 mushrooms) Shiitake mushrooms, sliced
6 Green onions, chopped (or 4 Tbspn chopped onion)
1 Garlic clove, minced
8 Tbspn Balsamic vinegar
4 slices Bacon, chopped/crumbled

In a sautee pan, put the grease and oil, heat over medium heat. Saute mushrooms for 1-2 minutes, add onions and garlic and continue to sautee until onions are cooked. Not so long though that garlic browns. Turn burner to lowest setting and stir in vinegar and the crumbled bacon. Warm through and pour over salad.

I poured this over a whole head of Boston lettuce with sliced tomatoes and it was fantastically good. Sadly, the picture I took didn't do it ANY justice. Just trust me, this will make your kitchen smell fantastic and will make your mouth happy.

Making a Come Back...

It seems like in the last two months everyone has been beat up by something. People were coming down with all sorts of silly combination illnesses including flu-like symptoms, bronchitis, pink eye, strep throat etc. I myself was taken out of the work force for nearly 3 weeks due to a fever that turned into strep throat,  turned into dual earaches, turned into dual pink eyes. In addition to viral/bacterial infections it also seems alot of people were having surgeries or getting out of casts that kept them out of the fitness loop for months.

Going from 60 to zero and then being kept there for weeks or even months can mess with your head, not to mention your body. So what do you do? My first bit of advice is, "don't beat yourself up." It's easy to finish your first workout back and feel hopelessly weak and out of shape. It's easy to be mad at yourself for not feeling as fit as you once did, but lets face it, right now you aren't as fit as you once were. Yup, reality is a nasty little fish that bites you on the ass when you're skinny dipping.

You can't build a house on an imaginary foundation. Finding out how un-fit you now are is pretty crucial in knowing how to get started again. At our CrossFit we erase all of your 1-rep Max numbers and best times to wipe the slate clean and to give you a fresh start. You are now free to do work without feeling like you're working in the shadow of past achievements. You are free from feeling like your best effort isn't good enough until it matches what it said on the board.

Before you took a hiatus, you must have spoken with a new kid at least once. They said, "ugh, I feel so out of shape. I couldn't even do one thing in that workout as Rx." How did you respond to them? Now you're on the receiving end of that advice.You're the new kid, but with AWESOME form. One or one hundred scaled workouts doesn't make you hopeless, each one is just a point on a time line. More of a fit line. So plot your point and move on.

I didn't do a workout for almost three weeks. My first attempt at a workout and I did one round, 36 total reps in a CrossFit Open WOD, went home and took a 3 hour nap. The next workout back included a near-cry during and a 2 hour nap after. Only three weeks out of the gym and I still needed to slowly work my way back up to where I had been before.

Think again about that new kid. They didn't do any excercise before coming to your gym and now they're so excited they want to come every day even though they can barely roll out of bed in the morning. Did you tell them not to come in? To go away and not come back till Thursday? You remember hitting a WOD well 4 times a week, but now that's you! Getting back into it often requires easing back into it.

I like to remind myself that I got sick because I hadn't been listening to my body's needs. I pushed too hard for too long and got wolloped. But whether you were sick, injured, on vacation or otherwise removed from action, you can absolutely get back what you've lost. Don't concern yourself with where you were and how much you could lift. Focus on what you can do today. Ease back into your regimen and listen to your body when it says to back off. It will also tell you when you can floor it :-)

Bakin' and Burpees Baby!

Okay, okay, I'm kind of kidding. I think alot of us like to bitch and moan over burpees, but we don't actually hate burpees. That being said, however, they're not exactly groovy after doing them steady and fast for 7minutes (thanks HQ xoxo).

I did the CrossFit Open WOD on the morning after the workout was announced (7min AMRAP of Burpees to a target in case you missed it). My friend and I went back and forth about who was going to do it first (you, no you, no I insist you!). I "won", went first and did a miserable job of keeping the aftermath to a minimum (I haven't been that close to crying from a workout in a loooooooong time).
Even though the worst part of it is minute 7 to 8, when you've stopped moving and everything tightens up, it wasn't bad enough to keep me from wanting to try doing it again on Saturday.

This brought me to thinking, we CrossFitters are SO fun! Typically Friday night is thought of as a "let loose" from the work week night. Hey, go grab your friends! Let's drink and stay out late because we can sleep in tomorrow! Let's be irresponsible because we've been UBER responsible all week at the office! CrossFitter's fridays don't look like that, especially during the Open. Tonight I'm getting dinner early (5pm kinda early) with a friend. There will be no booze. We will probably go to the grocery store together, because we are WILD WOMEN! and I'm going to get almond flour, figs and honey because I am going to see if I can make a Paleo-ish approximation of Fig Newtons! Our box typically holds a post-WOD potluck barbecue and I thought Fig newtons would be a fantastic food to indulge in after those bazillion (hopefully) burpees.

My goal for this weekend is to add 7 burpees to my score and to revel in newly developed Figgy thingies (fun name to be developed whilst mixing, rolling, baking). Saturday night I shall again go to bed early so I can recover! Oh yes, we CrossFitters are SO fun! It's just that our fun is another (wo)man's torture and usually happens during daylight hours.

Your Fears Will Not Stop My Dreams


CrossFit may be coming out from the underground, but we aren’t leaving our garage gyms! Articles are popping up in main stream magazines trying to offer unbiased views and reviews of the craze. Articles always remark that our sense of community is astounding, with whole gyms banding together and forming families (of sorts) but then they always launch into the dangers associated with our workouts (WODs).

The trouble with these articles trying to show you what it’s like “inside the cult” are that they are always written by a reporter, a reporter that tries CrossFit for a week. A workout or two is not sufficient time to understand us or our community. I, however, have been CrossFitting since early 2008. We started “dating” and I got my coaching certificate later that same year. In other words, I’m passed the honeymoon phase where everything’s shiny and new and perfect. This is my response to the many versions of the “Inside the Cult of CrossFit” articles that is realistic but still admittedly slightly biased (I’m still in love after all).

Community
You are welcome here, all of you are welcome to come try a workout with us. Go ahead and try one workout with each of the CrossFits that are near you or your work place. Around 3,000 affiliates opened this last year, so it’s a good bet that you have at least two in your town.  You’ll know a true CrossFitter by how excitable we get when asked about what we do and why. I got to talking about CrossFit with a stranger in my local Starbucks one day (he saw a sticker on my laptop and asked me what it was) and after a few minutes he said, “Wow, I can see you love it. Your face just lit up discussing this.”                                                                                                                                                                                                     Yup, we love our workouts and a little like religious zealots, we believe that our way is the only way to get to be the fittest and healthiest you’ve ever been. It’s true for me, I’m the fittest and healthiest I’ve ever been, and it’s true for every other CrossFitter I know. So of course we’re excited that, by walking into a Box (term for CrossFit gym) you’ve decided to take responsibility for your health! We’re excited for you, your future, and for your family and friends that will benefit from your increased health and vitality. And we’re excited to have a new friend!                                                       
This CrossFit thing though is NOT for everyone, and that is the exact reason that we CrossFitters are a tight knit family. To someone outside the group, getting an entirely effective butt-whooping workout in (sometimes) less than 10 minutes is just unthinkable. “That doesn’t make sense, how can that possibly be true,” is a question I often hear from outsiders but it is that question exactly which made me walk into my first CrossFit. I just couldn’t imagine what could possibly make a workout that hard. For example, here’s a sample of a common conversation between a CrossFitter and their non-CrossFitting friend:
CF: “Ohmygod I’ve got to tell you what I did today at the gym.”
Non: “Oh yeah, did you talk to that hot chick?”
CF: “No, my workout was crazy. I had to do one power clean, 5 pull-ups, 10 pushups, 15 squats. Then 2 power cleans, the pull-ups, pushups, squats. Then three power cleans etc for twenty minutes. I can’t do real pull-ups yet, so I used a band on the pull-ups but I did ‘em! And my pushups are still pretty slow because they make you go all the way down to the floor, oh my gosh are my arms are gonna be so sore tomorrow hahahaha. I almost did 7 rounds though. It was awesome!”
Non: “Um, I have no idea what any of that meant.  Wanna go get some pizza?"
To a CrossFitter, these types of conversations are all too common and can get very frustrating. For example, a friend of mine made it the Games in 2011 (aka “the Olympics of CrossFit” ie “a BIG deal”) and could barely get his family to care. He may as well told them that he went to the library: they simply couldn’t comprehend that making it to the Games meant that he is one of the fittest people IN THE WORLD! People outside of CrossFit have a hard time understanding the astounding difficulty of our workouts and the high skill level required to execute certain movements (let alone execute them well and efficiently).  They simply aren’t used to the idea that an exercise program can include the common person, after all, aren’t true athletes famous and stuff?

Respect
It does break my heart a little whenever someone mentions that they need to get in shape before coming into our Box. That’s the biggest misnomer and I believe that along with the right coach on your side, CrossFit is the best place for a beginner to go. CrossFit aims to create highly functional athletes by evenly distributing it’s programming attention to ten physical skills; cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy.  
We believe that you are only as fit as you are competent in each of these ten skills. What does this mean for the beginner?  It means it’ll be really easy to impress me, all you have to do is really try. It means that I’m not impressed by the guy with muscles on top of muscles…I’m fairly certain his endurance will be non-existent.  It means I’m not impressed by the beginner with a 450lb deadlift…I simply think they have a big deadlift. It means that I’m not impressed by your 4-minute mile…I simply think that we have a lot of flexibility, strength and skill work to do. It means that I’m not impressed if you have the fanciest clothes and the cutest hair cut…I simply think you’re going to sweat in them just the same as in anything else. I’m also not impressed if you throw up during the workout…I simply think you ate too recently and aren't yet accustomed to this kind of workout. What DOES impress me is if you come back! It does impress me if you keep working to the best of your ability, if you keep track of your workouts and strive to improve every time you walk through these doors. Genuine effort impresses me. Peeling yourself off the mat after a WOD to cheer on and support the others who haven’t finished yet impresses me. You don’t need muscles or a 4-minute mile to do these things. You need respect; respect for yourself and for others.
Everyone that is a CrossFitter or is considering it should familiarize themselves with Teddy Roosevelt’s speech (portion of a speech anyway) known as “The Man in the Arena.” This describes the CrossFitter's view of their training and the importance of every opportunity:  
“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat…”

So it’s inaccurate to have a veritable outsider do one or two WODs and then declare they know what it’s like to be a CrossFitter. They simply cannot know what it’s like to be in the arena, over months and years, striving valiantly and taking failure along with triumphs and knowing they’ll never be among those who stayed “safe” on the middle road never realizing their potential.
When I read an article written by Grant Stoddard, “Inside the Cult of CrossFit (I read it on Yahoo health, but apparently was originally printed in Men’s Health Magazine) I knew I needed to comment. Read again Teddy Roosevelt’s speech above and then read this excerpt from Grant’s article about his experience during a workout.

“It wasn't just the intensity or the inappropriate competitive zeal that put me off CrossFit. The endless affirmations—all the clapping and grating exclamation points after "You're doing a great job!"—brought out my inner misanthrope. The last straw came when I found myself in a class of 12, mostly women. They'd all finished, but I still had 3 sets to go. There's something uniquely humiliating about trying to squeeze out a fifth round of 10 pullups, completely red-faced and fatigued, with a group of women yelling encouragement. I finished 2 minutes after my nearest rival, stumbled through a forest of high-fives, and then went out the door and never came back.”


It saddens me that what he found horrifying was that women not only beat him, but that they then SUPPORTED him. The NERVE of those ladies! What he didn’t realize was that they weren’t “women” condescending to encourage a “less-fit man” but that they were more veteran athletes supporting and encouraging a beginner. Where is the shame or horror in this scenario? Essentially, he did not respect himself to take this as an experience and say, “wow, I have room for improvement. These folks are pretty well conditioned to have done that so fast.” I can only hope that he respected those women that high-fived him before he quit to say thanks for the support. 
What I’d like you take away from this though is that if you think you would have acted similarly, then we don’t want you. That’s right, WE DON’T WANT YOU here if you’re going to whine about the workout and not take action to improve. [While this may sound harsh, I mean it in more of a parental way rather than hateful.] WE DON'T WANT YOU if you're going to cheat on the workout and do 8reps instead of the prescribed 10reps. No one is perfect, we’ve all come in last before, we’ve all scaled a workout before (and will again most likely) and if you’re going to quit when the going gets tough then I don’t really want you on my team and part of our family. To whine incessantly, to cheat on the workout, to not really try, to disregard coaching advice; these are all ways in which you are showing disrespect to the others in your class, to your coaches, and most importantly to yourself. Don't you want to be BETTER than that?!

CrossFit isn’t for everyone and for some people it just may not be the right time to start. Afterall, Zumba isn’t for everyone either and I’m not a bad person simply because the dance-exercise class doesn’t give me a thrill. It is true though that workouts as difficult as ours can sometimes highlight insecurities. Another reason why having a supportive family dynamic here is so helpful: we’ve all had our experiences with this and can help you get through it, but you have to be ready to allow it to happen. For instance, I once was overcome by sadness and insecurities from a recent break-up during a WOD entitled “Air Force” causing me to burst out in tears and leave the room. No one ever quits a WOD (we’re all too motivated to finish and workouts are usually too brief to find a reasonable excuse to stop) let alone leave the room. Not being able to finish that day was a blow to the ego on top of everything I was going through. So yeah, sure, I could have been so embarrassed by that so as to not go back the next day, but you know what? There were zero repercussions, because it happens and we all get it. Today is today, tomorrow is tomorrow.  Just give it the best you can. Grant (above) never went back to his Box because it seems he was too embarrassed and I can’t hate on him for being the person that he is at whatever point in his life that he’s at. But maybe one day he’ll decide that he’s ready to walk back into a Box, to be part of a community and to give back to his teammates, at which time he’ll be warmly welcomed home.

Is CrossFit Dangerous?

While relevant, this is rarely covered in a realistic manner. Addressed correctly it can be informational, but when the commentary gets sensationalist I just ignore it. Bottom line is that everything can be viewed as dangerous, so don’t try to scare me with an outsiders view of some of our inside jokes (like Pukie the Clown). Recently  there was an article in the New York Times about the dangers of doing Yoga…if you do it wrong.  I also just read a blog post about the dangerous nutritional deficiencies that can result from eating lettuce….if you eat nothing but lettuce! Articles about the dangers of long-term long-distance running pop up from time to time but are quickly brushed under the carpet, so to speak. I could twist an ankle in Zumba or sustain a meniscus tear, but where are the sensationalist articles about the dangers of Zumba?
                The less-than-glamourous aspects of CrossFit that are usually highlighted are a condition known as rhabdomyolysis and the pseudo-mascot-if-you-will Pukie the Clown.

Regarding Rhabdo
                Rhabdomyolysis (aka Rhabdo) is a condition in which skeletal muscle is fantastically damaged, leaching the cell contents into the bloodstream. Certain contents such as myoglobin are toxic and overwhelm the kidneys which can lead to  kidney failure and, in extreme instances, death. This is bad, very bad and it is not worn as badge of CrossFit honor no matter what silly magazine article you are reading. An outsider may here someone joke about it, but I assure you it is not something anyone strives to “get”.
One of my favorite parts of Grant Stoddard’s article (I have nothing against good ol’ Grant, but his article just highlighted all the things I dislike about mainstream CrossFit articles) was that he included the following as part of his argument trying to illustrate that CrossFit causes rhabdo.
"In January 2011, a local paper reported that 13 football players at the University of Iowa were hospitalized with rhabdo after a workout that included 100 squats with 50 percent of their 1-rep max. It wasn't a CrossFit workout, but it was in the same ballpark..."
If you look at what I highlighted for you, “it wasn’t a CrossFit workout.”  While there may be some instances of rhabdo occurring as a result of a CrossFit WOD, other things can cause this condition as well (see the link below). However, it is a serious condition and if you are thinking about starting CrossFit I recommend that you take the foundations course that each location should offer. If you are coming from a competitive sports or military background, swallow your pride and take the foundations course also (in which each beginner is introduced to the basic movements). Don’t try to skip it “because you know how to do this stuff.”  You may feel like you’re ready to do the WOD as prescribed but scaling appropriately for the first few months or more enables your body to get accustomed to the high demand these workouts place on your system. A good coach will know how to do this. (Read this fantastic article posted in the CrossFit Journal for more real information regarding this condition.)     

Regarding Pukie the Clown
I’m not a fan of throwing up, I really hate it a lot. I myself have never thrown up from doing a CrossFit workout and I’m sure there are some people out there that take that as a sign that I’m not hardcore enough. Whatever to them. The cases in which I have gotten nauseous are as follows:
·         First time I did a series of 250m sprints on the Concept2 Rower
·         Drank too much water before the workout
·         Ate too much right before the workout
·         Didn’t drink enough water and was dehydrated during the workout
·         Was coming down with the flu anyway
·         After the 1st WOD in the 2011 CrossFit Open
That’s it, in just about four years of CrossFitting I can count my run-ins with nausea on less than two hands and 3 out of 6 times it was due to improper fueling. As my body has adjusted to the intense workloads I rarely now get nauseous. Now it’s only during extreme heat or humidity during the summer that I can sometimes get woozy but that’s more of a sign to me to pay better attention to proper hydration than anything else.  

My Social Club
                We often joke that we could have just joined the local Portuguese Club in order to make friends. But no, this CrossFit is my social club. I get out of work, head over to the Box to hang out with my friends, and I just so happen to get a workout in also. I like it because of the variety; I don’t know what the workout will be so every day holds a surprise. I like it because I appreciate the challenge; some movements are complicated and require constant practice. I like feeling successful; even if I scale a workout I have the success of having completed it to the best of my ability. I really believe that CrossFit brings out the best in people and gives us opportunities that our regular life at the office does not.  CrossFit is the great equalizer, enabling someone strong yet slow to match someone weaker but fast in a workout. (I've come in behind a woman that was 8months pregnant in a sprint workout before. I've come in second to a 60 year old before. That's beautiful!)
                It also is unifying people around the world. You see someone in the airport with a CrossFit affiliate sweatshirt on and you can strike up a conversation, speak the same language “WOD, Fran, AMRAP”, and understand each other. Regional competitions are even a little like family reunions except that everyone ends up bruised, sweaty and gasping for breath at some point.
Yup, we’re a little out there I suppose but I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. Amazing Gracie: A Bulldog's Tale

Today I'm taking a slight departure from the usual health and fitness post because I wanted to bring you this little piece. Sometimes we get wrapped up in our health (I must eat these carrots) and fitness (I must get to the gym tonight!) and forget that health is happiness also! So here you go. This is the story of a sweet little dog that avoided a very lonely death thanks to two very big hearted people.
It is 1:00pm on an overcast Saturday afternoon in upstate New York and there is a loud snoring emanating from the bedroom… a wet, gurgling snore. I live in this apartment with my girlfriend of almost three years, Kara. She is asleep, but that snoring is not coming from Kara. The snoring is coming from the third member of our household: our bulldog, Gracie.               

Kara had always wanted a puppy. “What kind?” I would ask. “A fat one!” she would reply. “A fat one that loves me! And loves you… a little less.” Unfortunately for the first half-year we were living together, getting a pet would have been impossible and unfair for everyone involved. I was working hellish hours and before Kara got her new job, she would also be gone for 12 hours a day. Once Kara knew she could be home an appropriate amount of time, we decided that the time was right to get a dog.

We first had to decide what kind of dog to get. We knew we wanted a puppy. We also needed a breed that would do well in a relatively small NYC apartment. We decided on a bulldog, since they are usually pretty sedentary and they do not bark very much (which is a must for apartment living). Also, they are pretty damn awesome looking!

We did some research online, found a breeder in Brooklyn and set up an appointment. We arrived at the breeder’s house/shop. He was jovial and welcoming. The shop was little more than a single room with playpens arranged on the floor. In each pen were bulldog puppies of various ages and sizes crawling over each other and being absolutely adorable. We spend the next couple hours holding and playing with the puppies trying to get a feel for which puppy was right for us. We decided on a little girl who melted our hearts when she cuddled up in Kara’s arms and slept. She was 8 weeks old and 6 pounds. We then got all the paperwork in order, paid the breeder and left with our new little bundle of joy. The breeder assured us that we could call him if we had any questions or concerns.

Kara and I were thrilled with the new addition to our little family. We decided to name her Gracie. She was a fat little ball of wrinkles. She looked like a tiny piglet. We arranged an area of our living room for Gracie which had a bed, her water and food dish, some toys and her paper (since she was not house broken yet, obviously). Everyone that visited her marveled at how impossibly sweet she was.

It was only a few days after we brought her home that things took a turn for the worse. It started with what we thought was simply an upset stomach. Gracie would vomit and have loose stool but we figured that it was due to the transition of living with us (new home, new diet, new everything). We would call up the breeder with our concerns and he assured us that everything was fine. Then Gracie became lethargic. I called the breeder again and again he said she is probably just tired from the chaos of being in a new home. At this point, something didn’t seem right. Gracie was getting worse and Kara and I were worried. We could not get her to eat and had to manually give her water. All the more upsetting was that she would intermittently seem fine. She would seem sick but then roll around and play for a little while, which made me think we were out of the woods. We weren’t. At night, we set up a baby monitor in the living room so that we could hear if she was crying out. We would hear little whimpers and Kara would get up in the middle of the night to let Gracie fall asleep on her chest as they both lay on the couch.

Not even a week after we brought Gracie home, Kara decided to take Gracie to the animal hospital. Gracie was diagnosed with parvovirus (Parvo) and was given only a 30% chance of survival. Parvo is exceptionally contagious and about 80% fatal, causing gastrointestinal tract damage and dehydration as well as a cardiac syndrome. The vet told us that it would be $3000 to get Gracie the care she needed (which involved Gracie being quarantined at the hospital and stuck full of IVs).  If we were unable or unwilling to do that, we could either bring Gracie home and hope for the best, or allow Gracie to be (hopefully) adopted by someone else who would then pay for her treatment. Gracie had been part of our family for less than a week, but we were already so emotionally invested. We decided to go ahead with the treatment: all we could do was sit back and hope.
The next few days were very difficult. Our vet would send us updates on Gracie’s condition as well as pictures of Gracie. It was heartbreaking to see our little puppy all skinny with IVs in her little legs. Everything seemed so unfair. Why her? She had done nothing wrong. We told the breeder what was going on and he advised us to remove her from the hospital and bring her to Brooklyn where he could take a look at her. At this point, we realized this breeder was not legitimate. I was upset with myself. I should have spotted it. I should have walked out. I should have done more research beforehand (he and his wife change their names frequently and they used one of their aliases in our original correspondence). After we brought Gracie to the hospital, I called him and told him all the horrible things we found out about him and that we planned to sue him.

Then came the call we were hoping for. The vet told Kara that Gracie had perked up, had her appetite back and had successfully made it through! We were ecstatic! When we picked her up from the hospital, she was under 5 pounds. We carried her home and started our new life together as a family. Gracie has now been part of our family for over a year and a half. Honestly, it’s hard to remember what our life was like without her. She has brought so much satisfaction, love and humor into our lives. She has had some other health problems from time to time (as true with many bulldogs), but she toughs it out every time.

Having a dog is a very unique experience. I come from a family that always had dogs. There is not a time in my life when my family did not own at least one dog, so I knew what having a dog was like… sort of. I had never had a puppy and I had never been the OWNER of that puppy. I had never been the one that the puppy looks to for comfort, guidance, food, etc. Kara had a dog growing up as well, but she was in the same boat I was. It’s awesome and a little daunting knowing that this unassuming little being relies entirely on you. It is your job to protect it and to teach it (or try to teach it). Because of this, my bond with Gracie is stronger than with any other dog I have ever had.  

Every day I am thankful that Kara wanted a dog. Gracie is much more than just our pet. She is truly a member of the family with a very strong personality of her own. She makes us laugh every day. That is not an exaggeration. We laugh HARD. Gracie is fully grown now but she is still a very small bulldog. She is a compact 40 pounds but still rather trim (we always try to keep her weight in check). She can jump onto the couch over the arm and can hold her own in the dog park (for a few minutes) while running with other more athletic breeds. Gracie loves a long walk, but will occasionally decide she has had enough exercise, will stop dead in her tracks and insist she be carried home like a baby (which means Kara’s arms are super sore the next day). She brings a smile to the face of everyone she meets. She will waddle along in her pink argyle sweater (Kara’s influence) with her tongue hanging out over her tusks and you can’t help but laugh.

I have also never seen a more affectionate dog. Actually I have never seen a more affectionate… anything! At one point, Kara came down with a nasty flu and Gracie refused to leave her side, just like Kara did when Gracie was sick. Even though Gracie is 40 pounds, she still thinks she is a lap dog. If Kara and I are sitting on the couch, not only will Gracie join us, but she will insist on sitting between us or on top of us! She never wants to be away from her family. I never thought I could love a dog the way I love Gracie. Every so often I get frustrated when I think of how were taken advantage of by the breeder. However, it has turned out to be a blessing. We are so thankful we were able to rescue her and she shows her appreciation every day in big, wet bulldog kisses and warm, suffocating bulldog snuggles. She is stubborn and farts a lot and snores too loud, but I can’t imagine our lives without her. 



Do your research! Find a reputable breeder before you choose to adopt.
While all this was going on, Kara’s mother had managed to dig up some dirt on this “breeder”. We discovered pages upon pages of accounts of him selling sick puppies with false vaccination records to unsuspecting people. Once the sale is made, it is final. Sometimes the puppies would live and sometimes the puppies would die. Upon finding out all this information, I was beyond furious. I couldn’t imagine how someone could jeopardize the lives of innocent animals but I was also furious because I felt like I had been had. We spend hours in this man’s company that day we purchased Gracie. There were some things that I see now as red flags but hindsight is always 20/20. For instance, his shop is very difficult to find. He locks the doors at all times. He had us pay in cash. The contract we signed was poorly written.

The shady breeder we got Gracie from goes by many names. Anton, Tony, Anthony, etc. with the last name Maize or May. His wife usually goes by Rose or Dawn. Their business is sometimes called “Just Puppies”, “D&A Kennels” or “D&J Kennels” or simply “Puppies Ltd.” Their address is 177 West End Ave, Brooklyn NY 11235 but Google Maps lists it as 167 West End Ave. Actually, the true address is the one to the right of where Google Maps puts “167” but the building still has “177” on it. We did sue him in small claims and won. He never showed up. When I tried to put the ball in motion to collect our judgment, the sheriff told me I did not have enough information about him to collect (where he banks, his license plate number, etc.). Basically, he said our judgment is worthless. We are now considering getting a collection agency involved. BE WARNED, PEOPLE!

And I'm Not the Only One...


Chalk and Chi is reaching out and spreading it's branches wide! I intended it to be a blog chronicling my discoveries of how CrossFit and Yoga parallel each other. However, Chalk and Chi now has a bigger purpose, it's not just a blog of cutesy posts and fab pics (of myself...hahaha!) anymore.

Looking around the web, I found many people blogging about how yoga has helped them become better athletes. Balance, flexibility, mid-line stability and improved body awareness can all be developed through regular yoga practice and directly impact the quality and efficiency of your workouts. Even still, these hybrid blogs make up a paltry few compared to the majority of yoga sites. There's nothing wrong with yoga sites, don't get me wrong. I am a regular subscriber to many, however, I don't feel really at home at any of them. Why? I'm a paleo girl...most yoga sites push their vegan/vegetarian views at your through their articles, banners and product placements. Sometimes I just want to read an article and have the underlying theme NOT be a suggestion that I'm dirty and single-handedly destroying the world by my diet choice (especially when said diet choice has made me the healthiest and fittest and happiest I've ever been).
In the end we all have the same purpose; 
to live a happy and healthy life to the best of our abilities.
Me, I really want to read Yoga articles that don't PUSH a vegan lifestyle on me.
Paleo (meat eating) Yogis? Here you go!


Need to know that others are taking you seriously as an athlete?
Vegetarian CrossFitters? Got you covered.

How about athletes that would rather carry logs while barefoot than weight plates in Inov8s?
Paleo-style athletes? Oh yes, I want you too!

There is bad science (like The China Study) out there but now we're in a position to get the GOOD science into the right hands.

Starting back in high school I became and then was a vegetarian for about 8 years, a vegan eater for about a year after that and for roughly 3 months of that I was raw food vegan. Since then I've gone Paleo (with some grass-fed cow &/or goat dairy, raw when I can) and really feel this is where it's at for me and my health, all the way. I guess you could say that I know what it's like to be on the fringe. However, whenever someone implied that I was an a$$hole for being a vegetarian (at college in Maine, the land of meat and lobster tails) it never made me feel like "oh that guy is so passionate, he must be right." I thought, "oh that guy's a schmuck." Judging each other is not good for our souls. Let's step away from the water cooler, stop gossiping and start speaking truthfully...that is, start speaking from the heart. Sometimes we make less-than-stellar choices, but it's still our path and we need to walk it. That is how we learn and how we grow. 

 I am a new breed of human, and I'm not the only one.  

   We believe that sick-and-tired is NOT the price of the American Dream.  

We have (re)discovered our strength, our roots and we are
fitter, stronger, healthier and happier because of it.

Chalk and Chi is a place for the new breed to share information, thoughts, discoveries, recipes, workouts, successes, laughs...whatever is on your mind!

You are probably one of the new breed also. You know you are if you live each day in the pursuit of health and happiness, think that veggies and fruits are pretty darn amazing little things, you will not partake in the eat-sick-food-get-sick-get-shot-up-with-drugs cyclical drama, think trees and meadows are way flipping cooler than parking lots, do the best you can to live a more naturalistic lifestyle (one choice at a time), exercise with intent and purpose (no ellipticals here), and lift heavy $hit (REALLY heavy) because you can (and I REALLY like to)!

Sunshine In A Mug!

We all need a little love and a little sunshine...especially during this time of year. If you live in the Northeast you know what I mean. It's not even respectfully cold right now, it's wet, drippy, overcast and is an irritating not-cold-not-warm. It's the kind of weather that drips ice water off an eave and down your collar. *shudder*

A Yoga-friend just gave me this recipe last week and while she refers to it as "tea" I'd like to introduce it to you as a "sunshiney hug in a mug" (how many people did I just turn off with that?! hahaha). While simple, it includes some very powerful health-boosting ingredients like raw honey, organic ginger root, and organic lemon juice. I have made it every night since then...it's just fantastic! Okay, without further ado, here it is:

Ginger Lemon "Tea"

4 cups water
Organic Ginger Root, 2" chunk; peeled, sliced and then an extra chop or two for good measure.
Organic Lemon, cut in half
Raw Honey

Put the 4 cups of water in a pot, add the ginger root. Bring to a boil, then turn down and simmer for about 20minutes (the longer you let it go, the bigger the ginger flavor). *You may start to boil off water, which will just condense the ginger flavor. Add more water and reheat if you need to.

Into a mug squeeze half of the lemon. Use a regular spoon (not measuring) to scoop out a spoonful of raw honey and put the spoon in your mug. When the ginger water is ready, pour over the spoon. Stir until honey is dissolved.
*My only warning is that ginger is a known stimulant to the digestive system . A mug of this should be no trouble, but if anything is already "stirring" down there you have been warned. Just don't start with drinking all 4 cups of tea right before you turn in for the night...you'll hate me for days! Again: start with one mug and increase to find your level of tolerance!
